I imagined what it must have felt like to have sailed so far across the Pacific ocean, only to be imprisoned within sight of the shore on this small spit of land called Angel Island.

Layers of bridge lights, animated like birds in flight, fly over a dancer and a brush painting calligraphy.

They carved their names and poetry into the wooden walls of the detention center.
