A journey into culture and culinary pleasure
Gastronomica takes audiences to the heart of the visual and sensory power of food—as it is experienced in Minette’s Chinese and Nisma’s Bangladeshi family.
Video installation 120 feet (37 m) wide and 11 feet (3.4 m) high. Filmed, directed and edited in collaboration with Nisma Zaman for the Big Screens event at the IAC, New York. Music by and used with permission from Robin Sukhadia and Walter Kitundu.
Documentation of installation. Audience watches the video projection along a long hall, featuring intimate close-up views of the rituals and process of cooking.
For Nisma and Minette, food is more than sustenance. It’s a medium of communication.
In celebration of the rich heritage we brought with us to the United States, we decided to create an homage to the dishes our families made. Dumplings, curry, rice… all magnified in great detail and projected across a wall over 100 feet long by 20 projectors at what was then one of the world’s longest video screens.
Full scope of video wall, reduced to fit the screen.
